No problem. The day you arrive, meals start with dinner. The day you depart meals end with lunch. That is the only adjustment that we would make. I can pretty much work the massage schedule to be Thursday and Friday, so keep that in mind. All other things will remain the same.

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at Gravatt in May. It's always a beautiful time of the year to be in the pines.

Now, back to my regular quilting schedule.

LET'S GO SEW!!!

Joyce---One Loose Thread
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1609039927311314119.post-14915605235465859902024-03-05T14:32:00.002-05:002024-03-05T14:32:42.536-05:00Terribly Frustrating Day!!!

Here I am trying to complete the Zoo quilt and Facebook has screwed up my personal account. Where have I been?!! What has been going on?!! Let's see if I can get up to date.

The first week of the month was taken up at the Heart Hospital with the heart cath and all that went along with it. I did post about that little adventure. After that I was back in forward motion because May Mester with One Loose Thread was coming up.

Luckily, I had almost everything ready for retreat except for the necessary printing of name tags, medical forms.... stuff like that. I was able to work in a trip to Charleston for a Cobblestone Guild meeting. I don't do that enough, but, do try to manage at least one meeting a year. May Mester was soooo much fun! I had us set up in two buildings. In the Chapel was our 'sit and sew' group under the watchful eye of Ma Whittle. I was with the group in the Ireland Room of Cole Lodge with Elsa Neubauer and lots of Judy Niemeyer papers for 'Carnival Flower'........... It was a very productive 4 days for all of us. Of course we all gathered together for meals (fabulous food!!) so it was almost as though we were all sewing in the same room as we did show and share of our progress. No classes are planned for May of 2024, however, I have a few things on my mind that I might try. More on that later.

June involved a graduation, a week at the beach, an engagement, and a birthday (mine). During that time I did manage to get some client quilts completed. Hope to post all of those pictures very soon. Oh yes, also had new washer, dryer and oven installed. These were on my 2023 Goals List to get done this year.

So..... on to July!!!Finished up the scheduled custom quilt for Teresa Durden the first week. Had been working on that for 3 or 4 weeks. Met with some new quilting clients. Moderated a meeting of the SC Longarm Group and finished up several E2E quilting jobs for clients. Ordered tables for the One Loose Thread August retreat and started prep work for that. Took a class with Devine Quilters on a Sunflower pillow. 'Celebrated' a 1 year anniversary on the new knee (still doing PT twice a week and it's November). Submitted articles for the QSC newsletter.

Then we move to August. Well, Dick has not been with us now for 2 years and I still don't have a solid foundation under my feet. But, life goes on. Time for One Loose Thread Summer Retreat and I am soooo ready for it. It was hot, but all of the air conditioners were working so we stitched on. It was so much fun and a really good break for all of us. There really is something magical that happens when you drive through the gates of Camp Gravatt. My son and his wife celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and my oldest granddaughter (Piper) turned 20.

September just flew by with quilting for clients, meeting with guilds to talk about Quilters of SC, a meeting for the SC Longarm Group, Dr.'s appointments, and other misc. stuff. And then you turn around and....

It's October!! Time for Quilters of South Carolina retreat at the beach!!! This year I am the 'continuing' 'remedial' student on the 'Jack's Chain' quilt. I had started the quilt during Myrtle Beach Quilt Party in January 2022. I managed to get 2 rings done and a ton of 9-patches. So when I had the chance here to take Cindy's class again............ I did and managed to do a little more. I understand that slow and steady wins the race, but, this is ridiculous. All of these y-seams may do me in----or----I may just end up with a table runner instead of the king size quilt that I had planned. It really was a fun retreat. Met new people. Talked to people I had not seen in a year or years. Certainly had some great food. Love the location of the retreat as it is. Hope we can stay there for a few more years. Did manage to do more quilting for clients. Have 2 custom quilts in the works at this time.

Now it's November and time to work on finishing up this year. Fall retreat with One Loose Thread was small but mighty!!! We could not have asked for better weather! As usual, Gravatt did a wonderful job hosting us and we had a great time. Now it's time to look forward to February. Registration begins on December 1, 2023.

Today is Friday, November 17, 2023. I 'slipped' down I-26 to Harleyville to join the Low Country Longarm Group for their meeting today. Beautiful day for the drive and I-26 wasn't as crazy as usual. It was fun to see what they are working on and visit with some folks I had not seen in a while. The SC Longarm Group meets tomorrow and will be celebrating our 13th anniversary. Hard to believe it's been that long. My machines are running everyday working on client projects for Christmas. I still have some open time in the schedule for edge 2 edge quilting, but I imagine someone will call at the last minute and need a little help. I'm currently working on my 'Custom' schedule since we have a major quilt show in March. I also need to get a couple of my own quilts ready for that. I made a major decision this week and resigned all of my committee posts and a few other things so that I can really concentrate on One Loose Thread. I want to spend more time on client quilts, continuing education, and the One Loose Thread Retreats. After all, that's why I started One Loose Thread in the first place (and to help pay the grocery bill after retirement). So, I'm looking forward to being able to control my schedule a little better.

Thanksgiving will be here at my house. Dusty and his family will be here. Vickie and her family will be in the mountains of Georgia with the Sessions family. We are grilling steaks and saving the full turkey dinner for Christmas. I'll pull the 'Grinch' tree out of the closet and do a little decorating after that. We plan on being here for Christmas dinner here too so I don't need to worry about travel.

On the One Loose Thread side of the calendar: I'll finish up all of the e2e that was promised for clients for Christmas, work on 2 small commission projects for clients and really load the machines for some heavy custom quilting between Christmas and New Years Eve. I'll try to keep you up to date on that on the One Loose Thread Quilting Facebook page. I'll be using both hand guided and computer assisted quilting on each piece.

I have my 2024 'GOALS' list written up. Some of it has to do with One Loose Thread Quilting, but, most of it has to do with things that need to be done here in/to the house, studio, and yard. Just a hint, there are 32 items on this list. Some are very small 'to do' and some will take several days to work out. But, this list can keep me on track. I hope.

That's it for now. My wine glass is empty and my recliner is calling me. Both of the dogs have passed out in the floor here in the studio, so must be time for some TV.

I promise to get these quilt pictures uploaded very soon so that you can see that I did do 'some' work this year. Have a great evening!!!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1609039927311314119.post-28918110184735072582023-05-06T09:28:00.003-04:002023-05-06T09:28:46.846-04:00The Adventure Continues

Well, I'm home from the hospital. They released me Thursday afternoon once they had done the surgery on my wrist to alleviate the golf ball size bulge in the artery. Instructions not to work for several days (not weeks) but no heavy lifting for several weeks. My arm is really dark blue and the lower arm is sore and a little uncomfortable. I won't post pictures, 'cause it is UGLY!!! Taking Tylenol for this discomfort. Normally, I would have a few glasses of wine, but, I cut WAY back on that a month or two ago so that is not an option.

I have been relegated to my chair and the remote control. I mean, what do you do when you are a quilter and you are not allowed to use needle and thread or your machines? I am soooooooo bored!!! Reading quilting magazines and patterns doesn't help either. That just make me want to cut and sew fabric.

Cooper and Loosey are doing a really good job of 'watching Mom'. It is as though they have agreed to take turns. One stays with me while the other goes out, but right now, both of them are in the yard keeping watch over the property.

My next door neighbors, Alice and Charles, are feeding me so well, I'll have to start exercising to reduce the pounds that will be added. Both are awesome cooks and Alice brings over a tray like you would get at a B&B with a vase holding one of her beautiful roses. This is so appreciated and enjoyed by me.

I'm trying to do a little work to get ready for May Mester Retreat in just 10 days. I can't do the physical part, but I can get all of the paperwork completed. Pat will be here a day next week and we'll get everything else together. I am looking forward to 5 days at Camp Gravatt and starting a new Judy Neimeyer quilt, Carnival Flower. I will also be getting some help to figure out where I am on Bali Wedding Star. All of the arcs are finished, but not sure were to go from here.

Well, that's it for now. I'm off to my chair. I have used the DVR for the coronation, so will start watching that.

Have a fabulous weekend!!!

We found out about the need when I became extremely short of breath while climbing a hill. My numbers were fabulous so, imagine our surprise when doing a heart cath at that time to discover that this stent was necessary. So, had that done and everything went beautifully.

Fast forward to just a few weeks ago when I became extremely short of breath when climbing stairs to the Koger Center to attend a play. It was so bad that I was afraid I wasn't going to recover without EMS, but I did and was ok in about 20 minutes. That event let me know that I did need to see my cardiologist and ASAP. I scheduled an appointment and as soon as I started describing my concerns it was a definite yes for a heart cath.

I checked into the Heart Hospital on Monday for the procedure. The procedure went just fine. I can't remember at this time if it was 2 stents or 3 placed on the same artery as the last, but we had no problems doing that. At the end of the procedure a pressure type of bracelet was placed over the surgical entry area. By the time they got me back to the recovery area my wrist was swelling and my hand was turning blue. The attempt was made to place a second 'bracelet' beside the first one, but that didn't help. I was bleeding into the tissue in my hand, wrist and arm. They took off both 'bracelets' and of course, I started gushing. The staff in recovery held manual pressure on the surgical site for almost 2 hours before the bleeding was finally under control. I really admire the calm professional way that they handled this emergency. The end result was a very large hematoma on the wrist that was continuing to bulge. We kept the arm elevated over night, but swelling continued until late on Tuesday. (Naturally they admitted me)

We have petted and pampered the wrist and arm since Monday afternoon. Finally on Wednesday afternoon the decision was made to call in the Vascular Team. The hematoma had gotten to big to repair itself and surgery was going to be necessary.

So, that's where I am now. Surgery on the wrist will happen late tomorrow morning and a repair on the artery will be made. As with any surgery there are risks, but it is to risky not to do it.

As with all of these things, it could not come at a worse time. I have a major retreat in 2 weeks, my custom and my 2e2 schedule is full and I won't be allowed to use this hand/wrist/arm for 4 to 6 weeks. I explained to the surgeon what I do for a living and he knows longarmers and said I cannot use those machines for 4-6 weeks. Soooooooooooo, here we are.

The quilt retreat WILL HAPPEN, because I have some wonderful helpers. If there is one thing I know about quilters, it is that they adapt. I 'might' be able to sew a little but I will be able to enjoy everyone's company. And I can't think of a better place to rest and recover than in the pines at Camp Gravatt.

I have very understanding clients who will allow me to push their quilts farther out. Then once I have healed, I will work on getting all of those quilts out first. So, please continue to bring your tops in and I'll put them in the line to be done as I go.

That's where I am right now. I will be available by messenger, email, and text over the next few days. My family and friends are being very supportive and it's fabulous to have such a big circle around me. Please continue to keep me in your thoughts and prayers as they are soooo appreciated and they work. I'll get through this and be back stronger than ever. After all...... I have a birthday coming up!!!

Thanks,

Joyce---- One Very Loose Thread
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1609039927311314119.post-51968383661893408012022-10-09T15:05:00.000-04:002022-10-09T15:05:42.278-04:00Quilt Retreat Food............ with One Loose Thread
I have heard so many stories about quilt retreat food.

1) Guests do their own cooking

2) If at a retreat center they get 'institutional food'

3) Too much salt

4) Not enough of a variety

5) Wilted salad greens

6) My special diet cannot be accommodated.

And I could go on, but, I won't.

When I am planning a retreat for One Loose Thread, my venue is told 3 things.

1. Now occasionally, there is a hiccup and a dish may have a little too much salt. Yes, sometimes we run out of those fresh and best prepared vegetables (like asparagus). But for the most part the biggest complaint that I hear about food is that there is just too much of it (not my thought, but some say that). Someone actually has remarked that she will go on a diet the week before camp so that she might not have to do it after camp. Doctor's appointments involving bloodwork are done BEFORE camp............ just saying that many of them are.

Yes, we take our food very seriously.

We do breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are desserts. For those on special diets accommodations are made for them whenever possible and so far it has been totally possible. Currently we have a 'special' dinner sometime during retreat and then have a great brunch on the last day before we all head for home. There are times that I alter that a little just to keep everyone on their toes.

We don't buy the groceries, prepare the meals, wash the dishes.. none of that. We are here to sew and be social and that's what we do. The kitchen staff ROCKS!!

Our retreats are 'out in the woods'. It's quiet. The lake is beautiful. The sleeping accommodations are cool in summer and warm in winter. They are very comfortable. The retreat center makes sure of that.

All in all, if fear of lousy food is your reason for not trying a One Loose Thread retreat, please reconsider. I try to make everyone feel relaxed and as though they are a guest in my home. My special retreat center does the same.

Hope to see you during one of our retreats next year:

February (February 22-26, 2023) is a 'sit and sew' retreat with an optional mystery quilt thrown in for fun. The last 3 years have been difficult for many reasons. Covid was not the only occurance that really threw all of us off for a while.

As many of you know Mr. OLT had battled cancer since he was 35 years old. Most recently bladder, kidney, and oral cancer. Dick died of heart failure on August 9, 2021, one year ago last Tuesday. To say that this has been a huge adjustment for me and my family would be a great understatement. Knowing that he would not be walking in the door on Friday afternoons has not kept me from waiting to hear the lock turn. The dogs have finally stopped looking for him, but, I haven't. Loosey still won't get up in his chair. So much has gone 'un-done' since all of this has happened. In the same time line, so much has happened.

As Dick was taken to the hospital in July, something happened in my knee. I was also having alot of pain in my left arm, but all of that had to take a back seat as we tried, valiantly, to get him well. He fought hard for 2 weeks to just live. He celebrated his 74th birthday in ICU. The staff sang 'Happy Birthday' and brought him special gifts. He loved it and that day he felt good. That was August 4th. So much happened over the next 5 days and I'm really not so sure that the procedures should have been pushed so hard. He grew weaker as each day passed.

One good thing out of all of this is that Vickie and Dusty had the chance to spend some quality time with their Dad. We took turns being at the hospital with him and the hospital 'kicked' us out each evening because of Covid rules. Hopefully, Vickie and Dusty had good conversations with their Dad. Ones they will remember forever and share with his Grandchildren.

Shortly after Dick's death I saw a surgeon about the pain in my arm that I was sincerely afraid was from a torn rotator cuff. It was determined that the problem was coming from disc compressions in my neck. So, off to surgery I go in December for a plate to be placed on the vertebral column in my neck. That was really interesting. I'm not really sure, even now, that it helped the pain in my arm as I still have times when it bothers me.

Anyway, the day of that surgery, I had extreme swelling in my knee. No pain, it was just 2-3 times the size that it should have been. So, I was then referred to an orthepedic/sports medicine practice to check on that. It took several months and injections before it was finally determined that I needed a total knee replacement.

Keep in mind that I was still longarming for clients, working the floor of a large quilt show, and conducting quilt retreats. You gotta do what you gotta do, right?

Surgery for the knee replacement was June 29. All went well. Lucky for me I have some fantastic friends that helped me through recovery, because all of my family was out of town. I had a 'window' of 5 weeks until I had the summer retreat for One Loose Thread scheduled. I had no intension of changing that.

Well, we all came home from camp last Sunday. I have been told that this was one of the best camps that I have ever hosted. I have been trying to figure out what made it so special and I think I know. All of you. Most, of the 'Frayed Knots' have known what was going on over the last year. Most knew that I had major surgery 5 weeks before. All of you know that I try to be very independent and have a hard time accepting help of any kind. But, you would not let me say no thank you. You didn't even ask, you just did whatever needed to be done. Everyone who attended camp this time had been there before. Either once or many times. Don't get me wrong, I welcome 'new Frayed Knots', but it was probably a blessing that I had returning 'Frayed Knots' with me this time.

It's going to take me a several weeks to catch up with promised quilts. I have a week scheduled for continuing education in September, so I will be working around that. Physical Therapy will continue for at least another month. I pretty much move around the house without a cane or walker. When I'm out and about I take my cane with me, but, don't rely on it. So, things are improving.

Cooper is looking forward to the day that he can get up in the chair with me and be a Lab---blanket. I look forward to that day too.

I think this brings us up to date and probably gives you and the WWW more information than it should, but I really wanted to let everyone know that: LIFE IS GOOD AND GETTING BETTER EACH DAY. Thank you for listening and caring.

Now:

LET'S GO SEW!!!!

One thing for sure! I could not have done this without the help of my friends, sisters, and son. It would be impossible..........no matter how hardheaded I am.

It's been 10 days since my surgery. I have had 4 rounds of in home PT. I have been able to keep the pain under control with the help of some good drugs. Notice I said 'under control' not totally gone. Expecting to have NO pain is totally unrealistic. I've had major surgery. Lots of muscles, nerves, and tendons cut or repositioned. Bone cut and metal applied in the joint. I have to expect some pain. I think part of the trick is staying on top of it and not letting it get ahead of the medication.

My PT is Tyler. He is calm and very understanding. He knows how far to push and then stop so that we don't damage anything. He also knows that I am exercising between visits as I have been insturcted to do.

So, for now, it is exercise............... ice..............exerscise.............. ice and repeat. I'm drinking lots of water (miss my Bull Bat time wine) and eating sensibly. Sleeping good and occasional naps.

The dogs are home and Cooper is very slowly adjusting to not being able to get into the chair with me. He doesn't know 'his place' yet, but, hopefully will find it soon.

This is certainly a 'learn as you go' experience. I'm sure I'll have to add to the list as I discover other things because I have a long road ahead. My current target date is August 3. We move into Gravatt Camp and Conference Center for 4 wonderful days of Summer Quilt Camp. Something to look forward to and a goal to work toward.............. makes life better everyday. :-)

That's it for now. Until later,

Y'ALL GO SEW!!!

This time of each year is always a maze of a racetrack for me. I finished all of the Christmas quilting. Attended Myrtle Beach Quilt Party. Hosting One Loose Thread Spring Quilt Camp. Working with Cobblestone Quilt Guild during their show. Attending QSC Spring meeting in Spartanburg. Getting the tax information to the accountant. Then also trying to maintain a longarm business so that my great clients can get their quilts completed in a timely manor. WOW!!! I am exhausted just typing all of this out here. :-)

Thankfully, Pat took care of tax prep for my business. That was invaluable. Dick left a big mess for me to wade through but, I did my best and if I find anything else, I'll just have to file an amended return. I did finish all of the expected show quilts and even finished mine. Delivered all of those to the Cobblestone Show and ......more on that later. Quilt Camp was AWESOME!!! I had such a great group and so much help from everyone. I have been having some really tough knee pain so all of that help was greatly appreciated.

Now, let's break all of this down to where it might make sense.

Myrtle Beach Quilt Party was so much fun. It was as though I had not been with adults in YEARS!! Pat took one class and I tortured myself by taking a class on a VERY DIFFICULT quilt. 'Jacks Chain' is extremely difficult for me to work with. All of these set in seams are a real bear.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfeY4slUdl3LY_wsQMzimVP_tUEsHSfyHlb9k2ynYb73NrxuonEqd_E_rBM3eOgL7O57oQ0wdni_7ZSiI94gM2onSOiZeYpHp6A6ihwcLZgSH39e8l9Qujuj8rzVL-gQYI1Myt64OPTqRKcRyXh0HhHS98tNkkfexSivhMCJJDBQGha54EvMZPAk38DQ/s2016/20220120_135734_resized.jpg" style="clear: left; She would be spending weeks with Marley to help out the new parents. Then she will be off on a cruise....

I came home to get everything ready for February (Spring) Quilt Camp. I had held registration to a number that could sew in just one building. So we all moved all of our sewing stuff into the Chapel at Gravatt. Janet and Judy were extremely helpful, especially since I could not move very well with this problem with a knee. We sewed, laughed, ate, even cried a little for 4 days. It was blissful. Kristy, Sally, and Corky helped load me up at the end of the weekend. Then Dusty came and unloaded and put all of the equipment back in storage until our retreat in May.

Mary did bring this back to me for quilting while we were at camp. Oh what a challenge this is going to be. I'll study a lot of pictures and talk to a lot of longarm quilters to get some good ideas before I start the quilting. This has to be one of my biggest challenges in this business. Trying to come up with designs that will work with the quilt so that it does not over power the quilt.

While all of this was happening, I was working on a couple of quilts for the Cobblestone Quilt Show. Dick (Mr. OLT) died in August. One of his favorite meals that I would cook would be chili (the other is my fried chicken). As soon as it would get the least bit cold then the chili would go on the menu. Well............. I probably have not cooked more than 10 meals since August. Tonight, I find myself in the kitchen working up a pot of chili.

I truly feel like the mad scientist at the stove. I hope this pot of chili is good enough to feed me for a few days with the weather getting ready to REALLY get cold. It sure brings back memories of more interesting times.

This recipe is one that I found in an original Betty Crocker cookbook right after Dick and I got married. He loved it then and he loved it always. Amazing how the little things can bring back memories and a few tears along with them.

Anyway, I wanted to share with you that I 'might' still be able to cook. Cooper has had his nose right up on the counter to make sure that everything was just right. Now it's time to butter some bread and have a bowl of chili.

Hope this posting finds you warm and snuggly in your home. I really plan to sew this weekend and get my entries ready for the Cobblestone Quilt Show. One needs binding and the other needs....borders....quilting...binding...a label........just a few things.

Thanks for listening.

<!--[if gte vml 1]><v:shapetype

This is what the full quilt looks like, BUT, I am working on the smaller version, the throw.

This top is so much fun to work on. The piecing is spot on and the Tula Pink fabrics are so much fun.

This was loading day. As you might see, this top is a hexagon, so care needed to be taken to get everything straight. I did baste the top on as I always do with custom quilting. Once that was done it was time to have some Statler fun.

The black areas were stitched on the first day of actual quilting. The red areas were stitched the second day of quilting. These designs are so cute and work so well in these diamonds. They were designed by Kim Diamond and are just perfect. They really make my job a little easier. So now at this point I have at least 25 hours in this quilt. And on we go!!

On this day I started some of the outer background. Things will stop for a week as I go to Myrtle Beach Quilt Party to start a new project of my own. When I get back, the quilt will come off of the frame, be trimmed a little, reloaded, and all of these open areas will be stitched. We're moving along and things are really looking good.

I'll let you know when it is complete!

This has been FUN!!!! I just hope that the client is happy with the quilt. What an experience this has been. I have had so much input from so many great longarm quilters. That just goes to prove that we support each other no matter the situation.

Tomorrow I'll pull this off of the frame and try to get some good pictures of the quilting. I have a little surgery scheduled for Tuesday and I won't be allowed at the machines for a couple of days. I really want good pictures of this whole quilt. However, this is the digital work up that I do as I finish an area. Then when the quilting is complete I have something on the screen that looks like this:

Now, I still need to un zip one end of the quilt so that I can check to make sure everything is stitched, clip threads, and generally admire the back. As I look at this mock up, I am very, very pleased with the out come. This has been a thought process for 10 months and to actually see it come to a reality is pretty special.

I estimated the actual stitching time on this quilt to be 60 hours. Could, and probably was, more than that, but I think 60 is a good estimate. That does not count the hours spent on line doing research and finding different block designs. The 'stand and stare' was done before the top ever arrived at my house.

So, I am going to up load some pictures. Verity has her quilt in hand and now she starts working on the binding. I really look forward to seeing it complete in the next several months. She is very meticulous with her work, so I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Would I quilt another one. Yes, I would. This is the second 'Jane' I have done. The first one we did in Baptist Fan edge 2 edge. This one is full custom all the way through. I love the way that both of them turned out. I would love to do another one...... or 10.......

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiVioKFPKUxbHSR9naIipsDuRikrleuiEjTxBpcXxQErHPuoEQtwhSPFuIMbVD799j69tuNTz0Pvkhka6VgNHz-sfwddxIYsQRwf1R8b5u15_W0ybmzwHHCfB01ioOZQTfzypwjhpNLPiPg5ZjwxoHkY-aj30om9nzJaTtSdZyvkrVBdSheEh2cujYKuw=s2016" style="margin-left: 1em; It's raining here in South Carolina and the day is very gray. We haven't had measurable rain in weeks, so this is really welcome. My container gardens really need this rain and the collards and lettuces look very happy.

I am spending this day in the studio working on 'Dear Jane'. I have ditched and plotted rows # 9 and 10. The block designs have been placed and I am currently stitching them out. Things are looking good.

OK.......... things are moving along. I have ditched and plotted row 11 and Olivia Statler is busy stitching out those designs. Next up will be the triangles to match these rows.

Do you realize that will leave me with one row and a full triangle border to do? So, I must start thinking about what I will stitch in the corner kites. I have some ideas, but, I'm trying hard not to use the same designs that Lynn used. Need something a little different.... maybe.

Oh my, Batiks Etc just announced that they have the new Jacqueline de Jonge Purple Sunrise Block of the Month. I have been waiting for this, so, of course I had to stop and order. Purple and orange can really be my downfall.

That will make 2 BOM's for 2022. That's just not true. Remember how I told you that the Stitch in the Ditch would not show on these pictures. Well, I spent several hours finishing all of the ditch stitching. The quilt is now ready to finish. I have several appointments away from the studio tomorrow, so there won't be anytime to work on Jane. However, Friday I'll be back to work with her. She is moving along and will be ready for pick up before long.

That's it for today. I am reminded of the fact that this is Pearl Harbor Day. We were taught that this day would "live in infamy", but will it? How much of our history is being erased? Just a thought. While I freely quilt today, in my studio, in my own home, in a town and state that I love, in a country that I believe in, I will say thanks to the hundreds of thousands that have served this country just so I could do that. (how is that for a 'run-on' sentence?) Seriously, take more than a second to think about the many that gave so much.

Now, on to the business of the day.

The bookkeeper had a procedure yesterday and we are not sure that she will be in to post retreat registrations until next week. So, if you don't hear from me this week, don't worry. Everything will come together before Christmas.

February registrations are steady. There is still plenty of room, but, you need to get those registrations in soon.

May Mester 2022 registration continues. There are plenty of cottage rooms available and lots of room to sew in both the Judy Niemeyer class and the Sit and Sew. Gather your friends and join the fun.

This is where I stopped last week:

Believe it or not, I am almost half way. That is a good thing. Olivia Statler is ready to continue our work. I need to put in 4-5 hours today. I am very pleased with how this is going............so don't let bad karma mess this up!

I'm finished for the day. I did manage to ditch stitch 4 rows (remember that those stitches don't show up on the screen). Also, plotted, set, and stitched 3 of those rows and a few triangles.

Things are moving along. I have another full day open tomorrow and we are going to carry on with this. I hope to also load Penelope Statler with an e2e that can run in the background.

So, have a good evening and I'll be back tomorrow!

Joyce-One Loose Thread
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1609039927311314119.post-83643983558588860852021-12-05T19:54:00.000-05:002021-12-05T19:54:23.997-05:00The Story of the Epic Quilt-Dec. 4, 2021
Today is Friday, Dec. 4, 2021. My primary focus for working today is 'Dear Jane'.

So this is where I stopped last night:

I am so please with how this is working out.

Today, nothing else will get stitched. Penelope Statler has a finished quilt that is waiting for me to take it off of the frame. But, it can just sit there until Monday.

I will have to do some paper work for February quilt retreat. Pat probably won't be in to work for another week, so have to log in registrations for both February and May retreats. Both are going well, I would just like to fill them both. The two retreats are so different, that they invite different groups to attend. That's a good thing. We all get to meet new quilters and learn new things. So, while I do that, I will be plotting and stitching on Jane.

It's the end of the day. Around 6:00. Time to pour a glass of wine and have a look at what has been accomplished.

Everything that shows in black is what was stitched today. I AM HALF WAY!!!

That's it for today. I'll be back with this quilt on Monday and all of next week.

I hope everyone has a really good weekend.

Joyce-One Loose Thread

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1609039927311314119.post-58199065783627368482021-12-03T19:35:00.000-05:002021-12-03T19:35:11.632-05:00The Story of an Epic Quilt
I met this quiltmaker probably 10+ years ago. I think that she has been working on this quilt all of that time, but, you would have to ask her. I do know that every time I saw her at a retreat, she was working on her 'Dear Jane'. It's been a true journey for her. I am honored to be in a position to quilt this for her.

This was taken when we hung the finished quilt top during one of my retreats at Camp Gravatt. Many of the 'Frayed Knots' have watched Verity work on this quilt. Through this quilt, many have learned the story of the 'Dear Jane' quilt and how it came to be. Actually, a whole new generation of quilters have come to know this quilt.

Since before I knew that I would get this quilt into my studio for quilting, I have been planning how I would want to quilt a Dear Jane. I knew that I wanted to preserve the heritage of the quilt. Verity also pieced this top with 30's reproduction fabrics, so, wanted to work well with that too. I have looked at thousands of pictures on Pinterest for ideas. I have talked with other longarmers that have quilted this quilt. One longarmer that has really helped me with choosing designs is Lynn. She really got me started on design choices and that has made this journey a little easier. Verity chose a solid backing for her quilt, so the quilting will actually show more on the back than the front. I like that. I like for quilting to take a backseat to the piecing on a quilt such as this. Batting is Quilter's Dream Wool. Thread is Superior's Bottom Line in the bobbin and Sew Fine through the needle. So, preliminary decisions have been made. Next comes loading the quilt.

December 2, 2021 is loading day. This should have happened over a week ago, but, today is finally the day.

Usually I totally baste a custom quilt on my frame before taking the first quilting stitches in it. However, I am approaching this quilt differently. I have spent lots of time with this top and know it to be flat and square. There should be no issues. There will be no thread color changes, so, I am going to start at the top and work my way down. Verity has drawn the scallops in below the triangles, so I have a really good visual and will know where to quilt and where to stop the quilting.

I spent 3-4 hours this morning deciding on the actual designs that I want to go in the blocks and triangles. I have studied all of my examples. Lynn sent me some great pictures and I have added some designs from other designers to my collection. Time to start stitching.

Since I am starting at the top, the first thing I have done is to stitch in the ditch the full upper border and the first 2 rows of blocks.

NOW IS THE TIME!!! I plotted the plain triangles, set the designs, adjusted where necessary, and started stitching. Olivia Statler and I stitched out all of the plain triangles with a nice tall feather design. Looks good! I am not 100% comfortable with the design I am looking at for the pieced/appliqued triangles, so, I'll sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

I used my Statler program, Creative Studio, and drew out the design that I wanted in the scallops. Have to make sure that I leave Verity plenty of room for that binding. I plotted those, and placed the design. Olivia Statler stitched these perfectly following my guidelines.

This is how the day finished. The stitch in the ditch will not show on these pictures because I dropped the belts on the Statler and used a ruler and hand guided the stitching. Time to call it a day. Tomorrow will be all about this quilt.

December 3, 2021, It is a beautiful day here is South Carolina. At one point today my thermometer was reading 80 degrees! In DECEMBER!!! I just love it. The only thing on my schedule today is Verity's Dear Jane.

As I said yesterday, I didn't feel comfortable with the design I had chosen for the pieced/appliqued triangles, so this morning I am in search of one that I feel will work better. I love the one that Lynn had used in her quilt for the plain triangles, but, felt that this needed something different. I finally found it. Printed out my block design listing and started plotting and placing designs. First in the pieced/appliqued triangles. Stitched those. Yep, I made the right decision for this quilt. These look great!

Next will be the blocks in the first 2 rows of the quilt. These have been 'ditched' and are ready to quilt. I have plotted and placed every other block and stitched them. Then I placed the rest of the blocks in the row and stitched them. I am in a great place to start working down the side borders. Usually I turn the quilt to do these, but, with these designs, I can work the side borders as I roll the quilt. Those triangles have been ditched, plotted, and designs placed and stitched.

I am not working the corner kites just yet. Decisions need to be made on those areas. They will wait until later.

It is now 5:30 in the afternoon and I am ditching the next set of rows. I had hoped to be farther along, but, this stuff takes TIME!! So, it's time to call it quits for today. Tomorrow will, again, be all about this quilt.

Pouring a glass of wine and putting my feet up. Ribs in the oven........... LIFE IS GOOD!!!

This is what I have to this point. What's in black was stitched today. Again, the stitch in the ditch will not show on these photos.

More to come tomorrow. Start sewing on Wednesday evening and sew until you leave Sunday after brunch!! You will be working independently but will have others with you that have many different levels of quilting skill from beginner to seasoned professional. You will be sewing in a sharing environment where if you need some help or an opinion they will be readily available. We all learn so much from each other. Especially during retreat time. This is my hometown and I love driving around to see what's going on. I knew there was an event happening at the State House today and law enforcement would not be necessary.

This is the sight that greeted me as I drove down Main Street toward the capitol building. This was what I was looking to see.

I am so humbled to know that I was a part of this tribute to our veterans. What you are looking at is almost 500 quilts of valor AND presentation bags that have been stitched over the last few months. Several years ago the South Carolina Longarm Group did this:

Since that time, this event at the State House has been a dream. A dream that Anne Mixon and the SC Quilts of Valor Foundation has made real. If not for Anne, I am not so sure this would have happened.

While I sat at that stop light, tears just flowed. I am so proud to know so many of the men and women that made these quilts. So many hands worked on these quilts. From the collection of fabric, the cutting of the patterns, the stitching of the blocks, the quilting of the quilts, the binding of the edges, the sewing on on the labels........and don't forget the construction of the presentation bags. So many steps. So many hours. So much love.

I personally want to thank the members of the South Carolina Longarm Group that really stepped up and quilted over 100 of these quilts. Many donated not only their time and expertise, but batting and thread and so much more. Doing this would have been more difficult without your help. Every time I ask for your help, you are right there and give freely of your time . Thank you so much.

So, now I am going to over fill this post with pictures. Every picture that I have been able to capture/steal from facebook since I left my camera in my car. It was a beautiful day!! I really hope that many of you could see this 'live and in person'.

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QTZF5wo8SXI/YKqoF9CrrLI/AAAAAAAAKPg/5Y5LBgVvGl4yGoQcbAZO0rJ907eXkvsGgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/187889152_10222676869661977_4516369412567286779_n.jpg" style="clear: left; I logged this quilt top into the Studio on February 14, 2019. I'm sure that Sally intended it to be shown at one of the Guild Shows in Aiken. That didn't happen. It hung for quite a while before I actually loaded it on my machine.

As you can see, it didn't start to load until July of 2020. So many things had happened in my personal life that somethings had to wait and Sally was kind enough to allow this to wait too.

So, it was loaded and I started the Stitch in the Ditch to stabilize the quilt. Everything went well. Stitching around ay type of applique' takes time and ditch stitching is one of the most difficult things to do on a longarm machine. Anyway, I worked through that over a period of time. Then it was time for the backgound fills on each block..................and she sits and waits..........and waits.........and waits.

There are days that I can walk up to a machine and just start stitching. Other times it will not let me take control. So I waited..........then I finally figured out what I wanted to do in the background. Something simple that would showcase the applique' and not just jump off of the quilt.

So, now I had all of the backgrounds locked down. There were some blocks that had interior areas that I would decide on later.........much later. Time for the sashing.

And she waits..........and she waits...........and she consults with a quilting mentor..........and she waits. Finally, I decided to do something a little unconventional. I set up my Statler and placed this design in the sashing areas.

This is the only part of the quilting on this piece that was computer assisted. So, the sashings are done.

Time for the borders. And, she waits........... and she waits...........and she draws........and she thinks........and she again consults her quilting mentor...........Then one day, she stitches.

Don't pay attention to the white lines. That didn't happen, but, it got me started and soon the border was complete.

Then I still had some blocks where the centers were open and those need 'something'. And she waits.....

Do you see now why it takes me so long to complete a custom quilt?........

At any rate, yesterday February 4, 2021, I took the last stitch in this project. Pulled it down so that I could actually look at it and I just cried. That happens to me when I am so into a project like this and then get to the end. It is done. I am really happy with the end results. And, I can't actually believe that I did it.

So, here it is. It will soon be on its way to Virginia, because Sally moved recently. Lot's of life changes for both of us, but, now we can put this one project aside.

If Sally will allow, I hope to take this to Quilt Camp in a couple of weeks for 'Show and Tell'. Then I can get it on a rack and get some really good pictures.
For now, it's off on another adventure. I have custom clients listed for the next few months, so it's off to start on another exciting journey!!

Have a great day!!
